ESP Cable Protector Installation Guide

2026-07-04 · 9 min read

A surprising share of early ESP failures trace back not to the pump or motor, but to the power cable — damaged during run-in-hole. Cable protectors are a small, inexpensive component that prevents an expensive failure, provided they are selected and installed correctly.

Why the cable is so vulnerable

As the string is run into the well, the cable is clamped along the tubing and dragged past couplings, casing and — in deviated wells — long contact points. Any pinch, cut or crush to the cable or its splices can create a fault that only shows up once the string is downhole.

Types of cable protector

Protectors range from simple clamp-on bands to cross-coupling protectors and mid-joint guides. The right type depends on tubing size, cable configuration and well deviation.

Selecting the right protector

Match the protector to the tubing and casing sizes, the cable dimensions, and the well profile. Deviated and tight-clearance wells demand more robust, closer-spaced protection than simple vertical wells.

Installation best practices

Install protectors at every coupling and at consistent spacing, ensure a secure fit without crushing the cable, and protect splices with particular care. A methodical, unhurried run-in pays for itself many times over.

Common mistakes to avoid

The frequent errors are too few protectors, over-tightening that damages the cable, skipping splice protection, and rushing the run. Each is easy to avoid and expensive to ignore.
